Broadband is a New Experience:
The applications that can be used on the latest Wifi standards. You remember that feeling of going online for the very first time? Imagine signing on to Yahoo or playing interactive video games at the pool. Ooooh or better yet using Skype or Yahoo Mobile from the pool while streaming video on your webcam! All this can be possible now if you have the latest router standard 802.11N. Thats just from a user perspective. Imagine if you are a developer and your designing websites and applications that need more bandwidth like Virtual Reality (VR). Here come the 90's all over again! Oh yeah baby! Finally VR outdoors !!!
Lets Compare the New Standards in 2008
The ongoing debate is about Wimax 802.16e versus Broadband Wifi 802.11N. The differences are in the two attributes speed and range. The similarities are that they both use MIMO (Multiple IN Multiple Out), which is basically 40 Megahertz as oppose to 802.11G 20 Megahertz.
Speed Issues:
With regards to Speed, Broadband Wifi 802.11N is actually faster than Wimax 802.16e. My company THE KIN CONSORTIUM has installed the Wifi N Solution and created a 300 Mbps connection rate off of an ISP connection of 100 Mbps...... take a moment to think about it. 100 WAS MULTIPLIED INTO 300 Mbps.
As far as the articles on the Wimax Standard 802.16e is concerned, they are talking about 70 Mbps. So Wimax is actually slower than Broadband Wifi.
Range Issues:
With regards to the Range of Broadband Wifi 802.11N its about 400 Meters in open spaces and less when it has to go through walls. That's of course with the standard antennas that come with the router. They are sure to offer bigger antennas that will enhance the range soon.
On the other hand Wimax 802.16e is ready today with a range of 40 Miles. Its just an issue of having to either subscribe someone else's Antenna or buy your own.
The fact of the matter is I pay for my own hard line connection at home, and I have my own Broadband Wifi Router. I connected all my peripherals to it including the Wifi Video Games.
THE BOTTOM LINE IS:
If its a choice between the two standards..... I choose Broadband Wifi over the slower Wimax solution simply because there are companies making Wifi Antennas that extend 40 miles. If I get one at a reasonable price, then I can run around the city using my personal LAN from my Internet connection at home.
Imagine connecting the car, the Personal Computer, the Laptop, and hopefully soon even my phone will be configured to use 802.11N standard.
